Displays his picture View in the Vicinity of St. Petersburg. Dubki at the Academy of Arts exhibition. Summer: works on Valaam, an island in Lake Ladoga whose scenic beauty attracted many landscape painters. On returning to St. Petersburg decides to publish jointly with Joggin and Guinet an album of lithographs of their Valaam sketches. September: visits an exhibition at the Rumiantsev Museum where Alexander Ivanov's picture Christ Appearing Before the People (1833 - 57) was displayed. This epic canvas aroused great public interest because of its truthful ring and the author's civic-minded approach; Shishkin has great praise for the work. December 23: is awarded a large silver medal for his views of Valaam (among them A Pine on Valaam, View of Valaam Island).
