Joins the recently formed Association of Russian Etchers. Summer: resides in Yelabuga and Sarapul (a town on the Kama). Paints the picture Evening. November - January 1872: takes part in the first Itinerant exhibition; from then on his creative career is inseparably linked with the Society for Circulating Art Exhibitions. Strikes up a friendship with Ivan Kramskoi, a gifted portraitist and art critic, one of the founders and ideologists of the Itinerant Society. The History of the Town of Yelabuga, a book written by the artist's father, I. V. Shishkin, is published.
