Silver, mother-of-pearl shell, precious stones Holland, Rotterdam. 1592
Nautilus cups or argonauts derived their name from the Paper Nautilus, from whose shells the cups were made. The artists successfully used the natural form of the shell, so that it looks like a wave with a frothing crest, over which is seen the figure of Neptune, the God of the Sea, riding on a seahorse with a trident in his hand. A similar cup is in the collection of the municipal museum in Rotterdam.
